Fort Martin Scott: Best Things to See in Texas

Planning a vacation to Texas has never been easier! Visiting the Lone Star State offers a strong variety of activities to choose from, whether that’s exploring big cities like Houston and Dallas, or exploring the smaller, more personal areas such as Fredericksburg. Home to the “Texas German”, this city is renowned for its wineries, as well as famous museum stops. However, there’s one aspect of Fredericksburg that often goes unnoticed, but is worth visiting: Fort Martin Scott.

This fascinating window into Texas’ past is sure to enlighten all history lovers, families, and curious explorers. If you’re passing through Fredericksburg, or are looking to stop for a while, adding Fort Martin Scott to your itinerary is a smart move. Here’s why.

What is Fort Martin Scott?

A historic military outpost established in 1848, Fort Martin Scott served as part of a line of forts built to protect the people on the Texas frontier. The fort was active for around seven years, but its impact has lived on. Today, visitors can visit the carefully restored building, viewing interactive exhibits, and walking along trails that paint the picture of what life on the frontier was like. The fort is just east of Main Street, perfect for adding on to any trip.

An Authentic Site

Fort Martin Scott is easily one of the best things to see in Texas because it’s authentic. Unlike many other historical sites that have been heavily modernized, much of this fort’s original layout is still intact and carefully maintained. It isn’t hard to envision what life would have been like for the soldiers stationed here, dealing with harsh conditions and uncertain times.

Beyond its obvious historical draw, the fort also offers a peaceful alternate setting to busier downtown attractions. Their open grounds, live demonstrations, and special events help connect guests to the stories of the American West, while taking a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city.
